TOP Hockey Club
Durham's Newest Hockey Club
TOP Hockey is the newest competitive hockey program in Durham Region, offering competitive teams and recreational programs for boys and girls to learn, grow, and excel on the ice. Our programs feature dedicated and professional coaching staff, local rinks, and a proven curriculum focused on skill development and game-based learning through our Play · Teach · Compete Model. Starting with our youngest players in Learn-to-Play and continuing into our Development Program and eventually Rep Teams, we create a pathway for every player to improve their skills, love the game, and develop leadership both on and off the ice.
The primary goal at TOP Hockey is to provide each player with a challenging development environment to improve their skills, learn the game, and eventually open post-secondary hockey opportunities. All TOP Hockey programs feature qualified professional non-parent coaches supported by full-time Technical Staff and a full-time administrative team. Our programs across Durham Region are hosted at local rinks in Whitby and Brooklin, meaning more time on the ice and less time in the car.
Our Multi-Sport Model ensures that the TOP Hockey schedule fits seamlessly into a well-rounded athletic experience alongside TOP Soccer and TOP Lacrosse. The TOP Hockey schedule is designed to minimize conflicts with TOP Soccer and TOP Lacrosse programs during the same season, allowing kids to play at the recreational or competitive level with very few scheduling conflicts throughout the season.

Full-Season Set Schedule
Predictable seasonal schedules provide unmatched visibility on your sports commitments for the whole season. From recreational to competitive, families know exactly when they're playing, every week, with very few changes throughout the season.
Professional Coaches
All programs feature qualified, non-parent coaches who develop positive relationships with players and follow modern coaching standards. Our coaches include former professional players, college athletes, teachers and educators passionate about giving back to the next generation.
Game-Based Development Model
Each session follows our innovative Play · Teach · Compete Model, ensuring players are consistently challenged through high-repetition, small-area games. We believe making the development environment fun, competitive, and engaging leads to faster development and better results.
Development Over Results
We focus on long-term growth, not sacrificing development for winning at all costs. Players are challenged to learn and grow, fostering a long-term love for the game and developing character skills through sport.
How We Train
Practice Format & Structure
Each week, our teams utilize a combination of two different practice formats:
Shared-Ice Station Based Skill Development Practices
For station-based practices, players share the ice with another team and rotate through four focused skill development stations, each led by one of our professional coaches. Smaller groups mean more touches, repetitions, and direct coaching, helping players develop their skating, puck handling, passing, and shooting skills within our regular schedule, without families feeling the need to pay for extra classes or private lessons to keep up.
Practices also feature small-area games that replicate tight, fast-paced game situations, helping players develop quicker decision-making and more confident puck skills under pressure. Sharing the ice also helps manage rising ice costs and keep programming more affordable for families.
Full-Ice Systems and Tactics Practices
Teams also have the ice to themselves once or twice a week to focus on team play. Full-ice practices allow coaches to work on systems, positioning, breakouts, forechecking, and, at certain ages, special teams, helping players understand how their individual skills translate into five-player units and the flow of a full game.
Rather than relying on long lines and static drills, we use game-based learning and a constraints-led approach, adjusting rules, space, and player numbers so that the lessons we want to teach emerge naturally through play. Players learn to read, react to, and solve real game problems on their own, stay active and engaged, and have more fun, creating an environment where enjoyment and development go hand in hand.
Together, these formats give our players a balanced development path: strong individual fundamentals, sharp hockey sense built through game-like play, and a clear understanding of team tactics, all delivered in a way that makes the most of every dollar and every minute on the ice.
